As a supplier of Cold Rolled Grain Oriented (CRGO) steel, I often get asked about how we achieve that special grain orientation in our products. So, I thought I’d take a few minutes to share the ins and outs of this process with you. Cold Rolled Grain Oriented Steel

Let me start by saying that CRGO steel is pretty amazing stuff. It’s used in a whole bunch of electrical applications, like transformers and reactors. The key to its performance is the way the grains in the steel are oriented. When the grains are lined up just right, it reduces something called core loss. That’s basically the energy that gets wasted as heat when the steel is used in an electrical device. Less core loss means more efficient equipment, which is a huge deal for a lot of industries.

So, how do we get those grains to line up in the first place? Well, it all starts with the raw materials. We use high – quality silicon steel as our base. Silicon is a crucial ingredient because it helps to increase the electrical resistivity of the steel. This is important because it further reduces the core loss. The silicon content in our CRGO steel is usually around 2 – 3%.

Once we’ve got the right raw materials, the first step in the process is hot rolling. We heat up the silicon steel slab to a really high temperature, usually around 1200 – 1300 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the steel becomes soft and malleable, which allows us to roll it into thinner sheets. During hot rolling, the steel goes through a series of rollers that gradually reduce its thickness. This process also starts to align the grains in a somewhat random way.

After hot rolling, we end up with a hot – rolled coil. But this is just the beginning. The next step is the real game – changer: cold rolling. Cold rolling is done at room temperature, and it’s where the magic of grain orientation really happens. We pass the hot – rolled coil through a series of cold – rolling mills, which further reduce the thickness of the steel. Each pass through the mill compresses the steel, and this compression starts to align the grains in a more specific direction.

The cold – rolling process is carefully controlled. We adjust the pressure, speed, and the number of passes to make sure we get the right amount of deformation. This is crucial because too much or too little deformation can affect the final grain orientation. We usually aim for a reduction in thickness of around 80 – 90% during cold rolling. This high level of deformation helps to create a strong texture in the steel, which means the grains start to line up in a preferred direction.

But cold rolling alone isn’t enough. After cold rolling, we need to do something called annealing. Annealing is a heat – treatment process where we heat the cold – rolled steel to a specific temperature and then cool it down slowly. This process helps to relieve the internal stresses that were created during cold rolling and also allows the grains to recrystallize.

During annealing, the grains that were deformed during cold rolling start to grow and form new, more uniform grains. And here’s the really cool part: the annealing process is designed to promote the growth of grains in a specific orientation. We use a special annealing atmosphere and control the heating and cooling rates very precisely. This encourages the formation of a texture where the <100> crystal direction of the grains is aligned parallel to the rolling direction. This specific orientation is what gives CRGO steel its excellent magnetic properties.

In some cases, we might also use something called secondary recrystallization. This is an additional heat – treatment step that helps to further refine the grain orientation. Secondary recrystallization involves heating the steel to a higher temperature for a longer period of time. This causes some of the smaller grains to dissolve, and only the grains with the preferred orientation continue to grow. This results in a very uniform and highly – oriented grain structure, which maximizes the magnetic performance of the steel.

Another important factor in achieving the right grain orientation is the use of inhibitors. Inhibitors are small particles that are added to the steel during the manufacturing process. These particles prevent the grains from growing in the wrong direction during annealing. They act like a kind of traffic cop, guiding the grain growth and ensuring that the grains align in the desired orientation. Common inhibitors used in CRGO steel production include manganese sulfide (MnS) and aluminum nitride (AlN).

We also pay a lot of attention to the surface quality of the steel. A smooth and clean surface is essential for proper grain orientation. During the manufacturing process, we use special techniques to remove any impurities or oxides from the surface of the steel. This helps to ensure that the grains can grow and align without any interference.

Now, you might be wondering why all this matters. Well, as I mentioned earlier, the proper grain orientation in CRGO steel leads to lower core loss and higher magnetic permeability. This means that electrical equipment made with our CRGO steel is more efficient, which can save a lot of energy and money in the long run. It also reduces the amount of heat generated in the equipment, which can improve its reliability and lifespan.

If you’re in the market for high – quality CRGO steel, you’re in the right place.
